HOW SWEET IT IS

This is Molly, one of our family milk cows. Why do we have milk cows on our pastured hog and market garden farm?

As my Dad once said, we’re an “Old MacDonald Farm”. Just like you remember Grandma and Grandpa’s farm back in the day, Groundworks is a diversified small farm. Why diversified? While streamlining a farm into one crop or venture may be more efficient, we like to integrate different animals and aspects of farming to create a ‘whole farm ecology’. In addition to our hogs, who integrate into our market garden rotation and rescue garden waste, we keep grazers to utilize pasture. Our pastured hogs benefit greatly from pasture, as does nutrition and flavor, but they also need the caloric boost of our Organic feed.

Cows are the great converter: turning solar energy (grass) into milk. Since the cows are making between three and five gallons a day, we must find ways to integrate the cows with another farm venture. (Enter hogs.) Milk is a superb food for all sorts of critters, including our scuttling little piglets. They grow for about a month or two after leaving their mom on fresh whole cow’s milk!

In addition to contributing to a whole farm ecology, keeping a family cow has some other perks, like homemade ice cream…
